It’s Not a Condition, It’s a Set of Symptoms
Low Back Pain, Leg Pain, Foot Pain?
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, running all the way from your lower back down the whole leg. This nerve functions by controlling the lower leg and provide sensation to your thighs, legs, and soles of your feet. It is important to note that sciatica is not a diagnosis, but a set of symptoms. Pain is expressed along the sciatic nerve, which is felt along your lower back, down through your buttock, and down into the lower leg.
What can cause these symptoms of sciatica? There are a number of reasons for this pain. Remember Elevated Health Center is not looking at your symptoms of pain, but seeks to determine the CAUSE of the your set of symptoms. We will look at all sites where the nerve could be entrapped, and determine why they are entrapped. Several of the reasons could be due to spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac dysfunction, and isthmic spondylolistheis. Contributing factors could be pregnancy, muscle strains, infections, and scar tissue among others.
Following a thorough examination including a specific and complete history and appropriate testing we will go provide a treatment plan, that will correct, remove nervous system interference. If appropriate, possible treatment may include: exercises, ergonomic advice, necessary postural alterations, and possible referral for additional diagnostic imaging. Sciatica responds well to chiropractic care to restore movement, thereby improving function. Remembering that sciatica is a collection of symptoms and not a stand-alone diagnosis, treatment plans will vary depending on your underlying cause.
