How Can Chiropractic Care Help with Headaches?
It is estimated that 9/10 Americans suffer from headaches. Triggers of headaches may be from the foods we consume, our environmental factors, to our behaviors (exercise, insomnia, change in blood sugar). According to the ACA, around 95% of headaches are considered primary headaches such as tension, migraine, or cluster. In fact, “a report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication (ACA, 2014).”
Cervicogenic are a common type of headache, which as the name suggests, is derived from the cervical spine. Based on postural deviations as well as muscular imbalances, the spine and the affected muscles often overcompensate and cause severe pain and long-lasting symptoms, such as pain in the neck, upper back, base of the skull, even radiating pain into the forehead and temporal regions of the head.
At Elevated Health Center, we do not treat headaches themselves; rather, we treat the conditions which tend to cause the headaches. Many people take ibuprofen for their headaches. The cause of the headaches, believe it or not, is not a deficiency of ibuprofen in one’s body! Chiropractors can perform gentle spinal adjustments to improve function and alleviate the stress on your system. Nutritional advice may be provided, which may include diet modifications or adding complex vitamins. In addition, advice and care may be provided for posture correction and ergonomic concerns, which may allow for relaxation of the tense muscles of the neck and upper back.
