Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

How Can Chiropractic Care Help with ADHD?

You’ve probably heard about all the attention paid to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Why has this diagnosis become such a common occurrence in schools these days? What are your options as a parent if your child does have this diagnosis?

Some consider ADHD a disorder of neurotransmitter function, with a specific focus on the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine is vital in learning regulation, as well as maintaining trained or conditioned responses and motivated behaviors. Dopamine is associated with motor activity that is guided by external cues and is goal directed. Norepinephrine is involved in maintaining alertness and attention. ADHD presents as a neurological disorder. The nervous system has two sides, one that controls the stressful situations in life and another controlling the relaxation side of things. We generally find that kids with ADHD have a nervous system that leans towards and is dominated by the stressful side.

A common approach utilized by many providers includes the use of a psychostimulant that increases the amount of central dopamine and norepinephrine. Ritalin affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. Ritalin falls under the category of a schedule II controlled substance which can produce similar effects to other drugs that fall under the same category, including cocaine and amphetamines. Gentle chiropractic adjustments help reduce and even eliminate disturbances to your child’s nervous system, and help bring that continuum to a more balanced nervous system that is less stress-dominated.

We do not “treat” ADHD, we do treat each individual in an effort to ensure that their nervous system is functioning at its best. At Elevated Health Center, we use scanning technology which allows us to determine how you or your child’s nervous system is functioning and then determine an appropriate plan of care. There are options outside of using a controlled substance to allow you and your child to live life how it is meant to be lived.
